Our Services
We provide free legal services including advice and representation to financially eligible people. If we cannot help you, we can give you information about other services that may be able to help you.
We also provide Public Legal Education, and support Community Development and Law Reform. We provide service to individuals, groups and communities. We welcome inquiries from community agencies.
Areas of Law
We mainly provide help for problems in the following:
- Residential tenancies (for tenants)
- Ontario Works (OW)
- Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP)
- Canada Pension Plan (CPP)
- Employment Insurance (EI)
- Employment issues
- Human Rights
- Sexual Harassment in the Workplace
- Consumer protection
- Notary services
Financial Eligibility
We provide free services to financially eligible people with problems in the areas of law listed above. We will ask you about your income and assets to determine if we are able to help you. The financial eligibility rules are set by Legal Aid Ontario and change from time to time. We do ask clients who are able, to pay for out-of-pocket legal disbursements, such as medical reports and court filing fees.
Referrals
We also give you information about other legal services and provide referrals to community agencies that may be able to help you.
Representation
We represent people at hearings at a number of tribunals including:
- the Landlord and Tenant Board
- the Social Benefits Tribunal (for Ontario Works and the Ontario Disability Support Program)
- Social Security Tribunal
We also appear in provincial and federal appeal courts for these matters.
What we can’t help you with
We can’t help you with problems with criminal, family or immigration law. These types of cases can be handled by private bar lawyers or other legal professionals. Contact us if you need a referral to other people or organizations who can help in these or other areas of law.
